Star Wars question?..................?

how come in episode 5, we can see some robot putting the Darth Vader mask on Darth Vader? I thought he could never take it off? I thought if he took it off he died.( correct me if im wrong but im sure its episode 5 that happens in and not 4. but if im wrong please tell me) I want to know so please answer. may the force be with you...
